Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Zachary Shane Mahaney
Zachary Shane Mahaney — known to many as Zach — served his community through more than a decade of work in emergency services and is remembered foremost as a husband and father. Born May 4, 1981, Zach grew up in Florida and completed high school at Lake Brantley in Altamonte Springs before pursuing education and training in emergency response. He earned firefighter and EMS credentials from Daytona State College and later a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management from Waldorf University.
Zach spent twelve years with Sumter County Fire Rescue, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant and held instructor certifications in USAR, HAZMAT, and live-fire training. Colleagues recalled a ready smile and a presence that could lift a room — qualities that helped shape his reputation within the fire service.
In July 2023 Zach joined the Palm Coast Fire Department as a firefighter-paramedic. His coworkers there described him as an admired colleague who brought experience and heart to the job. He lived in the Flagler County area after moving there in 2004 and remained connected to the region’s firefighting community.
Outside his profession, Zach was a family man. He was married and a father of two children; his role as a parent and husband was an important part of his identity. The public record notes a son from an earlier marriage; beyond that, Zach’s family life was private, and the dignity of those relationships deserves respect.
In late September 2024 Zach died unexpectedly. The circumstances of his death were reported in local media, and the loss was mourned by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. For his peers, Zach’s passing also underscored the pressures many first responders face and the importance of mental-health support for those who serve.
Those who knew Zach remember his professional dedication, his certifications and years of service, and the personal warmth he brought to friends and family. While public information about his life is limited to verified professional and family details, it is clear he lived a life of service and left an impression on the communities and people he served. His memory lives on with his loved ones and the many colleagues who admired him.
