Remembering Xy

A life held close in memory

Xy Lee was a young Hmong musician whose singing and songwriting touched listeners across the Hmong community and beyond. Born in Laos and raised in the United States after his family immigrated, he developed a gift for music early and taught himself to play keyboard and guitar. By his late teens and early twenties Xy was performing at weddings, community events and Hmong New Year celebrations; his music videos on YouTube earned him thousands of followers and millions of views, making him a familiar voice to fans worldwide.

Family was central to Xy’s life. He helped support his parents through his performances and shared a home filled with music and laughter. Those who knew him remembered a young man who used his talent to lift others—playing at gatherings, collaborating with fellow artists, and planning for a future that included opening his own recording studio so he could continue creating and supporting other musicians.

When Xy moved with his family from Long Beach to Fresno to pursue his career, he quickly became a part of the city’s large Hmong community. Friends and relatives described him as naturally gifted and generous with his time and talent. After his passing, family and community members celebrated his music at memorials and held multi-day funeral rites that reflected the deep connections he forged.

Though his life was brief, Xy Lee left behind recordings, performances and memories that continue to be shared by fans and family. His voice remains in the music he created and in the lives of those he supported—an enduring reminder of a young artist who gave his gifts freely and with warmth.
