Remembering WyTasha

A life held close in memory

Wytasha Lamar “WyT” Carter (November 13, 1974 – January 13, 2019) was a devoted husband and father whose life was defined by service, faith, and leadership. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he brought an encouraging presence to every room he entered and was known for a quick wit, steady intelligence, and a compassionate heart.

WyT answered a call to serve early in life, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, and later dedicating 17 years to public safety — the last eight of which he spent with the Birmingham Police Department. Over his career he served his community in several roles and jurisdictions, drawing on a deep sense of duty and a calm, natural ability to lead and mentor others.

Faith was central to WyT’s life. He grew up in the church, gave his life to Christ at a young age, and served as a licensed minister and youth pastor, where he invested in young people and shared his gentle guidance. Family and faith together shaped the man his friends and colleagues remembered: warm, principled, and steady in the face of challenge.

Outside of uniform and pulpit, WyT treasured his family. He is survived by his wife and children, and by parents and siblings who remember him for his devotion, laughter, and the quiet ways he showed care. Colleagues and community members likewise recalled his willingness to help others and the leadership he offered in schools and neighborhoods he served.

Funeral and memorial services drew members of his family, friends, and many in the law-enforcement community who came to honor his life and service. Flags were lowered in his memory and tributes noted the difference his steady presence made in Birmingham.

Those who knew Wytasha Carter remember a life of commitment — to family, to faith, and to protecting the community he loved. His legacy remains in the lives he influenced, the young people he mentored, and the family who continue to carry his memory forward.
