Obituary

A formal remembrance

William Eric “Eric” Freeman (January 31, 1971 – December 15, 2007) was a man whose life centered on family, faith, and service. A devoted husband and loving father to five children, Eric made his home in the Hazel Green area and was known for the warmth he brought to those closest to him. He grew up near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, remained an avid LSU football fan, and was an active member of Genesis United Methodist Church.

Eric’s lifelong ambition was law enforcement. After completing the 46th session of the Huntsville Police Academy, he served with the Huntsville Police Department for three years and earned the respect of his colleagues for his steady commitment to the job. Outside of policing, he was an entrepreneur who owned and operated D.O.G. Stateline Paintball in Hazel Green, where he combined his energy and interest in community activities.

Those who knew Eric remember a man who lived for his family and took pride in his role as a husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Leslie Freeman; five children, Cole, Cameron, Austin, Emily, and Elijah; his parents, Butch and Beverly Freeman and Kathy and C.L. Duck; siblings Jay Freeman, Pam Land, and Crystal Mason; grandparents Kelly and Margaret Freeman; and extended family and close friends who held him dear. Funeral services with full police honors were arranged by Hazel Green Funeral Home and were held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Hazel Green, reflecting the community’s deep respect for his service.

Eric’s life touched many — from friends at church to the colleagues who served alongside him. In the years following his death, his sacrifice has been honored by memorials and remembrances within the Huntsville community and law enforcement circles. Above all, Eric is remembered for his love of family, his devotion to serving others, and the everyday kindness and steadiness he showed to those around him. His memory endures in the people he loved and the community he served.
