Obituary

A formal remembrance

Walter “Kent” Mundell Jr., of Puyallup, Washington, was a man who lived with energy and a love for family and the outdoors. Born November 28, 1965, in Killeen, Texas, Kent grew up traveling and later made the Puget Sound area his home for more than three decades. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Lisa, in 1986, and their family — including daughter Kirsten and son Austin — were central to his life.

Kent brought the same quiet dedication he showed at home to his career in public service. For ten years he served as a deputy with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office in the Mountain Detachment, a role he took pride in and performed with professionalism. Colleagues and community members remembered him for his outgoing personality, zest for life, and the genuine care he showed to others.

Outside of his work, Kent enjoyed an active life filled with water and snow sports, flying, golf, camping, surfing, kiteboarding, and scuba diving. He was known to be sociable and magnetic — someone who embraced new experiences and encouraged others to join in. Friends and family recall his enthusiasm for travel, adventure, and the everyday moments spent with those he loved.

Kent passed away December 28, 2009, from injuries sustained in the line of duty. In the weeks and months that followed, his life was honored by family, friends, and the many members of the public whose lives he had touched. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; his daughter, Kirsten; his son, Austin; his parents; sisters; and a wide circle of relatives and friends.

His memory endures in the stories shared by those who knew him — of a spirited man devoted to family, committed to service, and always ready for the next adventure. Kent’s legacy is the love he gave and the lives he influenced, and he is remembered with deep respect and affection.
