Remembering True

A life held close in memory

True Cindy Vang—known to family and neighbors as Cindy—was a devoted mother whose life centered on family and community. Born in Laos and resettled in the United States with her family, Cindy raised six children in Fresno, California, and was known for welcoming relatives and friends at family gatherings. Those who knew her remembered her cheerful greeting, her love of cooking (including traditional Hmong dishes), and the pride she took in dressing in cultural clothing for special occasions.

Cindy worked to support her children and helped care for younger relatives; family members who organized memorial support described her as someone who gave of herself to others and who brought comfort and stability to the extended family. Her children—ranging from elementary age through late teens in 2021—were central to her daily life and hopes for the future. Community members and activists in Fresno remember Cindy as part of the local Hmong community fabric, whose presence at cultural and family events left a lasting impression on neighbors and cousins alike.

Following her passing on March 23, 2021, neighbors and community groups gathered to mourn and support the family. Local organizations and neighbors organized vigils, provided immediate aid to the children, and started fundraising efforts to assist with funeral costs and the children’s needs. Those responses reflected the high regard many in Fresno’s Hmong and broader communities felt for Cindy and for the household she maintained for her children and loved ones.

Public records and contemporary reporting do not provide a full public record of Cindy’s early life or private accomplishments beyond what family and community statements shared at the time of her death. What is clear from those sources is that she was a real person with ties to family, culture, and community—someone whose everyday kindness and care made a meaningful difference to relatives and neighbors. Her memory continues through the children she loved and the family and community members who honor her life and work to support them.
