Tony Mayes

Tony Delande “Rabbit” Mayes, age 56, passed from this life on September 23, 2014. Born June 4, 1958 in Saginaw, Michigan, Tony was a longtime Flint resident and a graduate of Flint Northern High School (class of 1976).

Known to family and friends by the fond nickname “Rabbit,” Tony was remembered as a friendly, talkative man who never met a stranger. He cherished time with his relatives and friends and had a special way with children, who were naturally drawn to his warmth. Music was a steady joy in his life, and he took pride in his work as a master at detailing cars. In quieter moments he enjoyed American League baseball, card games and backgammon, and he liked watching Chinese films.

Those who loved Tony recall a man who valued simple pleasures and human connection: lively conversations, laughter shared over games, and the care he took in his craft. His devotion to family and his easygoing nature left an impression on the community around him.

Funeral services were held at House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church, and Tony was laid to rest at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends gathered to honor his life and the many small kindnesses he offered to others.

Tony’s life was marked by generosity of spirit and a steady love for the people and interests that mattered to him. He is remembered for the warmth he brought into rooms, for his skill and pride in his work, and for the gentle way he related to children and neighbors. Though his passing was sudden and tragic, the memory of his laughter, his stories, and his care for others endures among those who knew him.
