A formal remembrance
Thomas “Tom” Schweich devoted his life to public service, law, and teaching. A widely respected attorney, diplomat and author, Tom served as Missouri’s state auditor and taught courses in law and foreign policy at Washington University School of Law. Colleagues and neighbors recall a precise, thoughtful leader who pursued accountability in government and approached public life with seriousness and conviction.
A committed family man, Tom is survived by his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Emilie and Thomas. Friends described him as driven and principled, someone who cared about the institutions he served and who worked to make state government more responsible on behalf of taxpayers. His career included public diplomacy and legal work that shaped both local and international efforts, and he brought that experience back to Missouri through both public office and teaching.
Tom’s work touched many: students who benefitted from his classroom mentorship, constituents who saw him as a watchdog for the public interest, and peers who respected his dedication to thoughtful, evidence-based policy. He was known for clear thinking, rigorous standards, and a capacity for focused, persistent effort in pursuit of good government.
Tom Schweich died on February 26, 2015. His passing was met with deep sorrow across Missouri’s civic and academic communities.
