Remembering Timothy

A life held close in memory

Timothy Lamont Ruff, born September 26, 1973, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, was cherished for his large heart, easy smile, and devotion to family. Known to relatives and friends as a gentle, generous man, Timothy took particular joy in spending time with his nieces and nephews and in simple pleasures like fishing and sharing meals with loved ones.

A steady, dependable presence in his community, Timothy worked at Bridges BBQ and Piedmont Plastic. He was often described by family as a “big ole teddy bear” whose loyalty and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Family was central to Timothy’s life; he treasured reunions and the chance to be close to those he loved.

Timothy is survived by his mother, Phyllis Ruff Johnson of Shelby, North Carolina; brothers Luther Ruff, Twan Johnson, and Tydis Johnson; sisters Tiffany Johnson and Tacola Johnson; his longtime partner Sharon Phillips; and a wide extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends who will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Williams, and other family members who shaped his life.

Services to honor Timothy’s life were held at Green Bethel Baptist Church on April 13, 2024. Those who loved him remember his warmth, his willingness to help, and the quiet ways he showed care: a hand extended in hard times, a laugh that eased worry, and a presence that made ordinary days better.

While his life was cut far too short, Timothy’s compassion and the love he gave remain with his family and community. He will be remembered not for how he died but for the generous, loving person he was—someone who made space for others and left behind many who were better for having known him.
