Remembering Thomas

A life held close in memory

Thomas Lewis, 20, is remembered first for the ordinary, human things that made up his life: the pride he took in being a father, his fondness for cowboy boots and changing styles, and a steady curiosity about working with his hands. A native of Johnson County who lived in Gardner and Lenexa with family, Thomas loved cars — not only the spectacle of sideshows but the work of fixing and caring for vehicles. He owned a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass he planned to restore, and just a week before his death he had begun welding classes at Johnson County Community College, taking steps toward a practical trade he had begun to imagine for himself.

Family members describe Thomas as adventurous and warmhearted. He helped neighbors with small jobs — mowing lawns, fixing decks, and pitching in when someone needed a hand — and he delighted in being present for family moments. In photographs and in family memory he could be found offering support: walking to a hospital to be with a sister in labor, holding a new baby and quietly staying close. He was a role model to his young son and a beloved uncle and brother whose presence meant a great deal to relatives and friends.

Thomas had a playful side and a reputation for being a “knucklehead” in the affectionate way family members used the word — always ready to borrow a few dollars with a promise to return them, to take a joy ride in a sibling’s car, or to cheer at an old truck doing doughnuts. Those who loved him recall that mix of daring and tenderness: a young man trying to find his way, enjoying life’s small pleasures, and working toward a future that included learning a trade and restoring the car he loved.

Though public records and news accounts document the tragic violence that ended his life on January 30, 2023, those who knew Thomas emphasize the life he lived rather than the way he died. Family members set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs and gathered to honor him. The memory they share is of a son, brother, father and friend who showed up for the people he loved, who cared for his child, and who was beginning to build skills and plans for better days. In remembering Thomas, his family asks that he be held in the quiet dignity of those roles — a young father and a person whose everyday kindnesses mattered to those closest to him.

Thomas was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
