Remembering Theresa
A life held close in memory
Theresa Marie Kenkel, 32, of Earling, Iowa, was born July 17, 1993, in Council Bluffs and raised on the family farm outside Panama. From childhood she loved animals and the outdoors — hiding in the hayloft with her sister, caring for farm cats and dogs, and taking part in 4‑H. Those early years on the farm helped shape a practical kindness and a down‑to‑earth warmth that friends and family treasured.
Theresa was active in school and community life. She played softball, participated in CYO basketball, and represented her school in mock trial. She also threw shot put for the Harlan Cyclones and travelled with People‑to‑People to Los Angeles as a young student, reflecting both a curiosity about the world and a readiness to try new experiences. Family and friends remember her as bright, inquisitive — a child who would often ask “b‑why?” as she learned — and as someone whose smile could lift a room.
Her family remembers Theresa for her generous heart and steady kindness. She was the daughter of Allen and Tracey (Steele) Kenkel of Panama, and sister to Rebecca (Juan) Cruz Santiago of Kirkman. She was a beloved aunt to Alister and Scarlett Cruz Kenkel, and is also survived by paternal grandfather David Kenkel, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, and the companions who shared her home — including her boxer, Boddie. Theresa was preceded in death by grandparents Joyce (Dave) Kenkel and Robert and Wilma Steele, and by a much‑loved dog, Ace.
Theresa’s family and community gathered to celebrate her life. Visitation was held Wednesday, August 6, 2025, with a Time of Sharing that evening at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Panama. A Mass of Christian Burial followed on Thursday, August 7 at St. Mary of the Assumption. Those who knew her speak of a young woman who gave freely of herself, who looked for the good in others, and who left a lasting impression through small everyday acts of care.
Theresa will be remembered for the simple, steady gifts she brought to those around her: curiosity, a ready smile, and a generous willingness to help. Her family asks that remembrances honor the life she lived and the love she shared with those closest to her.
