Remembering Tabarie

A life held close in memory

Tabarie Nix was a 24-year-old Black man connected to the Humboldt Park neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. While public records about his earlier life are limited in available sources, local reporting confirms he was part of the community around Karlov Avenue and known to those who lived and moved in that area.

Those who remember Tabarie would first recall him as a young person with his whole life before him — a neighbor, friend, or family member whose presence mattered in small daily ways that rarely make it into public records. At 24 he belonged to a generation of Chicagoans shaped by family ties, neighborhood rhythms, and the ordinary hopes of young adults: building relationships, finding steady work or schooling pathways, and contributing to the life of his community.

On May 31, 2019, Tabarie sustained fatal injuries from gunfire and was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he died. The Cook County medical examiner later classified his passing as a homicide. Those facts are part of the public record and are noted here only to acknowledge the circumstances surrounding his death; they do not define who he was.

There is little publicly available, family-authorized biography or published obituary discovered in reliable obituary or funeral-home sources that would offer fuller personal details such as survivors, occupations, or celebrations of his life. That absence in no way diminishes Tabarie’s personhood: he was someone’s son, relative, friend, and neighbor, and his life had value beyond what was reported. This remembrance honors the human being behind the headlines and recognizes the loss felt by those who knew him.

If family members or close friends wish to share memories, photographs, or corrections to ensure Tabarie’s life is remembered in fuller, personal detail, those contributions would allow a more complete and intimate portrait to be preserved — one that focuses on the relationships, stories, and character that made Tabarie unique.
