Obituary

A formal remembrance

Steven “Steve” Louis Valdez (May 10, 1952 – July 25, 2015) is remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle who cared deeply for those close to him. Born in Salt Lake City to Thomas Rudolph Valdez and Elizabeth Silva Valdez, Steve spent his life in the Salt Lake area and built strong bonds with family and friends. He worked for many years at Artistic Printing Company in Salt Lake City, where colleagues recall his steady work ethic and everyday reliability.

Steve’s family life was central to him. He is survived by his wife Rebecca Martinez and stepson Joseph, and is also remembered by his sons Jesse and Eddie (from a marriage to Loretta Velarde) and his son Steve (from a marriage to Janet Sanchez). He was part of a large family that included siblings Martha, Delores, Gloria, Patrick, Danny, and Thomas; several relatives preceded him in death. Those who knew him often called him “Beaver,” a family nickname that reflects familiar, personal ties rather than public recognition.

Services were handled by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center in Murray, Utah. In the days since his passing, family and friends have come together to share memories of a practical, family-centered man whose life was marked by steady work and close relationships. Though his life ended unexpectedly, those who loved him remember Steve for the ways he showed up for family and for the everyday moments that made him who he was.

Steve’s family asked that remembrances focus on his life and the people he loved. His memory endures in the stories and quiet recollections of those who knew him best.
