Remembering Steven
A life held close in memory
Steven Charles Hoard, 46, of Randolph, Kansas, passed away at his home on February 9, 2015. Born February 14, 1968 in Concordia, Kansas, Steven built a life around family, hard work, and simple pleasures. He married Karla Kaye Keener on February 12, 2000, and their partnership and family were central to his days.
A gifted welder by trade, Steven applied his skills at several places over the years—including Hutchinson Mayrath and work on Army National Guard vehicles at Fort Riley for the State of Kansas—and later at Kansas State University's facilities. For a time he owned and operated the Phillips 66 station in Randolph, and his interest in metalwork grew from hobby into a small business, Steel Kreations. Those who knew him remember a hands-on, practical person who took pride in workmanship and in providing for his family.
Outside of work, Steven enjoyed the outdoors and family activities. He found joy in fishing, turkey and deer hunting, gardening, smoking meat, and riding dune buggies to Waynoka, Oklahoma. He treasured time with his children, step-children, grandchildren, and extended family—connections that meant as much to him as any project in his workshop.
Steven is survived by his wife, Karla Hoard; children April Tate (and Michael) of Clay Center, Ashley Hoard of Manhattan, and Crystal Hoard of Randolph; two stepchildren, Levi Bailey (and fiancée Jamie Rood) of Riley and Ashley Bailey of Randolph; grandchildren Reika Tate and Jaycee Bailey; his parents, Dennis and Carolyn Hoard of Randolph; sisters Marsha Hernandez and Tricia Daniels; and a wide circle of family and friends who remember his steady presence.
He was preceded in death by grandfathers Charles Hoard and Kyrl Begnoche. A memorial service was held February 15, 2015, at the Clay Center Covenant Church. A memorial fund was established by the family.
Steven’s life was marked by practical skill, devotion to family, and a love for outdoor pursuits. He is remembered for the care he put into his work and the warmth he shared with those closest to him.
