Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Steven Harris IV
Steven Harris IV was a young man whose life centered on music, family, and the pursuit of a meaningful future. A sophomore studying criminal justice at Southern University, Steven was also a proud member of Southern’s celebrated marching ensemble, the “Human Jukebox.” Those who knew him described a person who loved music — often wearing Human Jukebox paraphernalia — and who took his place in band life seriously, finding community and purpose through performance.
Beyond his campus life, Steven was a devoted father to a young son. Family members, teachers and band directors recalled that fatherhood mattered deeply to him; friends and mentors described him as determined to be present in his child’s life and committed to the responsibilities of parenthood. His instructors at Southern and those who worked with the Human Jukebox remembered a bright presence whose passion for music and learning left an impression on classmates and younger students.
Steven grew up in the West Feliciana area of Louisiana and remained connected to his local community. In public remembrances from family and from Southern University’s band leadership, speakers emphasized his musical talent — instruments and performances that were a central part of his identity — and the way he carried himself as both a student and a young father.
In July 2024 Steven’s family reported him missing on July 17; his body was later found in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Those facts are part of the public record and the subsequent legal process concluded with convictions related to his death. Even so, the enduring threads of his life are the human ones: a young musician who loved band life, a student striving toward a career in criminal justice, and a father who took his responsibilities seriously. At his funeral in August 2024, family, friends and band staff gathered to celebrate those parts of his life — music, fatherhood and the bright potential he carried.
Public accounts contain limited private detail; what is consistently visible in reliable reports and in the words of family and band leaders is that Steven mattered to many people as a musician, a student, and a father. This remembrance honors those verified elements of his life and the love his family and community expressed for him.
