Remembering Stephen
A life held close in memory
Stephen Laird “Steve” Craven, 38, is remembered for his dedication to family, service, and his career as an airline pilot. A Coast Guard veteran and a member of Vineyard Christian Church in Florence, Steve carried the Olympic torch in 1996 — a moment that reflected his pride in serving others. He flew for Delta Air Lines and was active with the Airline Pilots Association; colleagues recognized his commitment to safety and teamwork, and he was part of a Delta team honored as team of the year in 1999.
At home in Edgewood, Kentucky, Steve was a husband and the father of two young sons. Those roles mattered most to him; friends and family describe him as a steady presence in their lives who strove to provide for and be present with his children. He is survived by his wife, Adele Craven, his sons Daniel and Joseph, his parents Garnet V. Craven and William W. Craven Sr., and siblings who remember him with affection.
Steve’s life combined service and quiet devotion: military service with the Coast Guard, a professional career in aviation, and active church involvement. These parts of his life made him a familiar figure to many in his community. Though his life was cut short on July 12, 2000, those who knew him recall his steady professionalism, his love for his family, and the smaller acts that marked his everyday character. He is remembered with respect and affection by those who shared his life and work.
