Remembering Stephen

A life held close in memory

Stephen E. Stamates, 72, of Florence, Kentucky and Buffalo, New York, passed away on October 24, 2023. Born September 27, 1951, in Buffalo, New York to Eugene George and Maryann (Koscielniak) Stamates, Stephen built a life grounded in family, steady work, and community ties.

For 33 years Stephen worked at the Ford Motor Stamping Plant in Woodlawn, New York, where he retired after a long career as an AGV tender. His work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his life, and he carried those qualities into the many social groups and clubs where he was a familiar face. Stephen took part in the Carriager’s Social Club in West Seneca, the American Legion Post #4 in Florence, the Old Bastard’s Club in Franklinville, and the Moonlight Hunting & Fishing Club in Burlington, Kentucky — circles where friendships, shared stories, and camaraderie mattered most.

Family was central to Stephen’s life. He was preceded in death by a son, Travis Stamates, his parents Eugene G. and Maryann Stamates, and a brother, Timothy Stamates. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Schwab) Stamates; his brother Mark Stamates; sister-in-law Susan Stamates; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who recall his gentle manner and dependable presence.

A Celebration of Life will be held in 2024; the family will share details when arrangements are finalized. Those wishing to honor Stephen’s memory are invited to consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization selected by the family.

Stephen’s life was marked by quiet constancy: decades of steady work, friendships nurtured through clubs and local organizations, and deep family connections. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his gentle nature and the simple, meaningful ways he showed care for others.
