Remembering Stephen

A life held close in memory

Stephen John Arling, 22, of Chickasaw, Ohio, passed away on October 9, 2017. Born April 3, 1995, in Coldwater, Steve was the cherished son of John and Barbara (Heitkamp) Arling. A 2014 graduate of Marion Local High School, he was known to family and friends as a loving son, brother, and uncle who took joy in simple, shared moments.

Steve enjoyed working with computers and had a quiet enthusiasm for learning about technology. He also loved spending time outdoors—bowling with friends, camping, and participating in Boy Scouts—activities that reflected his steady, friendly nature. Early in life he delivered papers for The Daily Standard, and at the time of his passing he worked at Crown Equipment in New Bremen.

He is survived by his parents, John and Barbara Arling; siblings Bridget, Megan, Amanda, Nathan, and Rachel; nephews Ryan and Leland; niece April; grandparents Ivo and Mildred Heitkamp; and a wide circle of aunts, uncles and cousins who remember him dearly. He was preceded in death by his sister Cynthia Arling and grandparents Frank and Mary Ann Arling.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Precious Blood Church in Chickasaw, followed by burial in Precious Blood Cemetery. Family and friends gathered to honor Steve’s memory, share stories, and celebrate the steady kindness he offered to those around him. His family asks that those who wish to remember him do so by holding close the ordinary, treasured moments of life he seemed to appreciate — time with family, quiet curiosity, and small acts of care.
