Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Stephan Bates
Stephan Christopher Bates was a lifelong Norristown resident whose family remembered him for his loyalty, steady presence, and big heart. Born November 24, 1965, Stephan grew up in Norristown and attended Norristown Area High School. He later earned a welding certification, a skill that reflected his hands-on nature and practical approach to work and life.
Family was central to Stephan’s life. He was a devoted son to Constance Bates, a brother to Karen, Jacqueline and his twin Stephanie, and a brother to Wendell, Esco and Marshall. He was a father to children including Shardae, Tanesha, Byeia and Zoey, and a proud grandfather to several young granddaughters who brought joy to his later years. Those closest to him remember a man who “showed up when it mattered,” checked in on people, and defended and supported his loved ones without hesitation. His mischievous childhood nickname, “Stimey,” recalled fond memories and a playful side that family members cherished.
Stephan’s life was grounded in day-to-day acts of care: offering help to family and friends, being a dependable presence at family events, and maintaining the ties that mattered. In the Norristown community he was known as someone with a generous spirit and a practical skill set, reflected in his welding certification and the steady work that followed.
On June 7, 2022, Stephan’s life was tragically cut short; an autopsy later ruled his death a homicide. The circumstances surrounding his passing remain part of the public record, but what endures most in recollections from family and neighbors are the moments of kindness, the steady loyalty, and the ways he made room for others in his life.
Those who loved Stephan remember him not for the manner of his death but for the care he gave and the place he held in a large, loving family. His memory lives on in the stories, nicknames, and the small daily gestures that showed the warmth of his heart.
