Obituary
A formal remembrance
Stanley Robert Hisel, born November 11, 1953 in Holtville, California, lived a life defined by steady work, practical skill, and a quiet generosity that reached beyond his own family. A man who spent his life working with his hands — as a hot-tar roofer, handyman, and later as a property manager — Stanley took pride in providing for others and fixing what needed fixing. Those who knew him remember a dependable presence who was willing to lend a hand whenever it was needed.
On May 27, 2000, Stanley married Deborah Anne Giddings; together they became a caring presence in their community and a source of support for many. Through their connection with Resurrection House in Chickasha, Stanley and Deborah reached out to adults and young people who needed a hand getting back on their feet. That outreach work reflected the warmth of their home life and the openness with which they treated friends and neighbors.
Stanley served briefly in the United States Army at the close of the Vietnam era, an experience that followed him into a life characterized by discipline and determination. He was the son of Richard Robert Hisel and Betty Ann (Ash) Leatherberry and grew up in California, where he attended local schools before establishing his adult life in Oklahoma.
Family was central to Stanley’s world. He is remembered by many children who knew him as “Pop,” and by a wide circle of extended family, grandchildren, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters. Survivors include his wife Deborah; their children and stepchildren; his mother, Betty Leatherberry; siblings Curt Hisel, Elizabeth Hisel-Carruth, Cristy Hisel, John Hisel, Scott Leatherberry and Tammy Bailey; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends whose lives he touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Stanley and Deborah’s lives was held February 1, 2020 at the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel. In remembering Stanley, family and friends recall a man whose work ethic was matched by a generous heart — someone who found ways to serve others in daily life and in community outreach. His steady kindness and willingness to help remain lasting parts of the legacy he and Deborah leave behind.
