Obituary

A formal remembrance

Sonny Kim was known first for his devotion to family and community. Born September 30, 1966, in Seoul, South Korea, he made Cincinnati his home and served the city with quiet steadiness for nearly three decades. Those who knew him remember a loving husband and a father whose care for his family was central to his life.

Over a 27-year career with the Cincinnati Police Department, Sonny earned the respect of colleagues and neighbors alike. He was often seen working in the neighborhoods he served, attentive to everyday concerns and connected to the people around him. Family members and city leaders alike honored his commitment to public service, and his presence in the community was a comforting constant for many.

Funeral services in June 2015 drew members of the public, fellow officers, and community leaders who came together to recognize Sonny’s life and the kindness he showed to others. Public visitation and memorial services were held at the Cintas Center at Xavier University, followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Sonny is remembered by his wife and their sons, and by siblings and extended family who treasured him as a son and brother. The city and community have continued to honor his memory in the years since his passing, including dedicating a neighborhood park in his name as a lasting tribute to his service and ties to the neighborhood.

Though his life ended while he was performing the duties he believed in, those who loved Sonny emphasize the life he led: a committed family man and a public servant who cared for the people of Cincinnati. His memory endures in the family he raised, the colleagues who worked beside him, and the neighborhood spaces that now carry his name.
