Skylar Thomas Powell (Nov. 15, 1997–May 18, 2016) was a recent Benton High School graduate from Saint Joseph whose family, friends, and community remember his youth, presence, and promise.
Remembering Skylar
A life held close in memory
Skylar Thomas Powell, 18, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away on May 18, 2016. Born November 15, 1997, Skylar was a proud graduate of Benton High School and a young man known to his family and friends for the years he spent in the Saint Joseph community.
A service to celebrate Skylar’s life was held at Grace Evangelical Church, where relatives and classmates gathered to honor the warmth he brought to everyday moments. Friends and family were welcomed by the Powell family to share memories and offer support during the visitation at Rupp Funeral Home prior to the service. Skylar was laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Skylar’s life and memory were honored by those who knew him best. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions to the Skylar Powell Memorial Fund in care of Rupp Funeral Home, a reflection of their wish that his memory be used to support others and to bring comfort to those affected by his loss.
Though his time was far too short, Skylar’s place in the lives of his loved ones endures through their stories and remembrances. He is remembered as a son, a friend, and a young member of the Saint Joseph community whose graduation from Benton High School marked a hopeful milestone in a life with so much left to give.
