Sierra M. Jenkins

Sierra M. Jenkins grew up in Norfolk and built a life guided by curiosity, community and a devotion to journalism. A 2019 graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in African American studies, she returned to southeastern Virginia to report on the schools, families and neighborhoods that shaped her hometown.

Privately described by family and colleagues as funny, energetic and caring, Jenkins began her professional path with internships at Atlanta Magazine and CNN before joining The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press in December 2020. In her reporting she focused on education policy, school budgets and social issues — work that reflected an interest in stories that could create change for young people and families across the region.

Those who worked with her noted her passion for local journalism and for making complex issues understandable and meaningful to readers.
