Remembering Sherrod
A life held close in memory
Sherrod Ahmad Person was born September 19, 2004, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Raised within an extended family that included grandmothers and close kin who helped shape his childhood, Sherrod spent his early years in the Roanoke Rapids community and remained closely connected to the places and people around him.
A 2023 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Sherrod played football through middle school and high school and was active with school teams. He was also deeply involved with Mount Olive Baptist Church during his youth: he sang in the youth choir, took part in missionary activities, and was baptized in July 2023. Those who prepared the family memorial noted how engaged he was with church life and how much those activities meant to him.
From his mid-teens Sherrod worked steadily, holding positions at local employers including Food Lion, Subway, Arby’s, Don Ponchos, and Vidant North Hospital. Family notices indicate he was looking forward to continuing his work life and had accepted employment with Lowe’s Distribution scheduled to begin April 1, 2024. These steady jobs and his plans for the coming months reflect a young person eager for independence and practical steps into adulthood.
Family and community ties were central to Sherrod’s life. He was raised in part by relatives who are listed in the family notice and is remembered among numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and siblings named by his family. Visitation and funeral services were organized by H.D. Pope Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids in March 2024, giving friends and family a chance to gather and honor his life.
Sherrod’s life was cut tragically short in mid-March 2024. Public reports confirm he was found deceased near the Gaston boat landing on the Roanoke River; investigations by local and state authorities followed. While those final hours are part of the public record, the fullest and most enduring memory of Sherrod is the ordinary, human life he led: a young man rooted in family and church, invested in work and team sports, and looking forward to the opportunities of adulthood. His family’s published memorial remembers the relationships and small daily commitments that made up his life and invites those who knew him to honor those memories.
Because public records and the family notice provide factual details about Sherrod’s birth, schooling, church involvement, employment, and funeral arrangements, this remembrance focuses on those verifiable aspects of his life rather than the details of investigation or legal proceedings.
