Obituary

A formal remembrance

Santino Joseph Contreras was a beloved son and brother whose laughter and gentle presence brightened the lives of those around him. Born August 7, 2012, in Sacramento, Santino grew up in a close-knit family that cherished everyday moments — shared meals, school milestones, and time spent with relatives and friends. Though young, he already held a special place in the hearts of his family, who remember him for his smiles, curiosity, and the small kindnesses he offered without thinking.

Santino attended local schools in Sacramento and was known to those who knew him as a playful, energetic child who loved being with family. He is survived by his mother, Christina Contreras; his siblings Marcelo, Gabriella, Christina Rose, Aaliyah Rose, and Camilla Aguilar; his grandmother Judith Engkabo; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who mourn his passing and celebrate his life. Family recollections recall moments of closeness with grandparents and extended family members, and holidays and family gatherings that reflected the strong bonds he enjoyed.

The suddenness of Santino’s death on September 21, 2024 left his family and community in deep sorrow. While the circumstances of his passing were tragic, the focus of remembrance remains on the fullness of his short life: the small joys, his bright smile, and the warmth he brought to those around him. In the days following his death, relatives and neighbors gathered to honor his memory and to support one another in grief.

Santino’s family has expressed gratitude for the condolences, community vigils, and offers of support they received. In honoring Santino, his loved ones have sought to keep his spirit alive through memories, stories, and acts of kindness that reflect the compassion he inspired. Though his time was brief, Santino’s presence left a lasting imprint on those who loved him — a reminder of the value of every young life and the importance of holding one another close.

Services and remembrances were arranged by his family and announced through the funeral home and local obituary notices. Those wishing to honor Santino’s memory are encouraged to offer support to his family and to carry forward small acts of kindness in his name.
