Remembering Ronald
A life held close in memory
Ronald Frederick Hudler, 73, of Grassy Creek, North Carolina, died January 24, 2008, at his beloved family farm. Born July 20, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, Ron grew up rooted in the Grassy Creek community and carried those ties with him throughout his life.
A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University (Class of 1956), Ron enjoyed a long and accomplished career in the private sector, including more than 40 years of service with General Motors and Electronic Data Systems. Colleagues remembered him for steady leadership and a readiness to help others — qualities he carried into retirement.
After retiring as a vice president from EDS in 1992, Ron returned to the land of his childhood. With his sons he cultivated Hudler Carolina Tree Farms into a widely recognized Christmas tree enterprise with farms in North Carolina, Virginia and Michigan. His work in the industry included leadership and volunteer service with state and national Christmas tree associations and efforts to support agricultural safety and the wider farming community. He also took personal pleasure in contributing trees to national and local holiday programs and in the Trees for Troops program that sent Christmas trees to military families.
Ron was a family man who cherished time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his son Dale Hudler and daughter-in-law Debi and their children Holden, Sam and Madison; his son Bill Hudler and daughter-in-law Mona and their sons Shane and Luke; and his daughter Deb Holroyd and her husband Tim and their children. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Hudler, and many nieces and nephews who remember his generous spirit.
Known for a gregarious nature, kindness and a warm sense of humor, Ron was active in civic and agricultural circles and took great pride in mentoring younger growers. His legacy includes both the family farm he helped grow and the many people he supported through his volunteer work.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to a fund established for his grandchildren, reflecting Ron's devotion to family and future generations. His life is remembered for service, leadership, and a deep love of the land and community he called home.
