A life held close in memory

Robert “Bobby” Hancock, 47, of the Birmingham/Vestavia Hills area, passed away on November 1, 2017. A man who found purpose in public service, Bobby was proud to serve as an officer with the Vestavia Hills Police Department after earlier work with the Tuscaloosa and Bessemer police departments.

Bobby was a devoted family man and a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Those who knew him remember a person committed to helping others and bringing kindness to daily encounters. He is survived by his wife, Angie Hancock; his daughter, Jasmine Waldrop; his parents, Talmadge and Joyce Hancock; and his grandchildren, Maxwell Eugene and Willow Rose Waldrop. Family and friends gathered to honor his memory with a memorial service at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church on November 4, 2017.

Beyond the uniform, Bobby’s life was marked by his commitment to community and family. Colleagues at the Vestavia Hills Police Department remembered him for his devotion to the job and the relationships he built with people he served and worked alongside. His passing prompted the department and community to renew attention to officer wellness and support, reflecting a wish that his legacy include better care for those who protect and serve.

Those who loved Bobby cherish memories of his kindness, his dedication to duty, and the everyday ways he cared for his family. He leaves behind family and a community that will long remember his service and the personal warmth he showed to others. In honoring his life, friends and family asked for privacy as they grieved and for continued prayers in his memory.
