Obituary
A formal remembrance
Dr. Richard Joseph Gottfried, 65, was a beloved dentist, congregant and community volunteer whose quiet devotion to others left a lasting impression on family, patients, and friends. A longtime resident of the Pittsburgh area, Richard practiced dentistry alongside his wife, Dr. Margaret “Peg” Durachko, and together they served countless patients in their neighborhood practice for many years.
Educated at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature before completing his dental medicine degree, Richard combined professional skill with a warm, humane manner that put people at ease. He gave generously of his time beyond the office — volunteering at the Catholic Charities Free Dental Clinic and offering pro bono care to those with limited access to dental services. Colleagues remembered him as a careful clinician who took pride in helping others and mentoring younger practitioners.
A devoted member of New Light Congregation, Richard grew deeply involved in Jewish ritual and community life. He served in leadership roles within the congregation and was known for his knowledge of liturgy and his stewardship of community traditions. After the death of his father he began saying kaddish regularly, a practice that reflected the importance of family and memory in his life. He also participated in congregational life through music and ritual, helping to care for a small Torah scroll that he and others restored for use.
Richard is remembered for steady kindness, professional dedication, and a commitment to service. He cherished his family and community, and his work — both in his practice and as a volunteer — reflected a life guided by compassion. His family has encouraged memorial contributions to New Light Congregation and other charities that support care for the vulnerable, continuing the spirit of service that marked his life.
