Remembering Richard

A life held close in memory

Richard “Rico” E. Hernandez, 47, of Topeka, passed away July 13, 2024. Born April 17, 1977, in Topeka, Richard carried a vivid creative spirit throughout his life. Known to family and friends as Rico, he took pride in his mixed Native American and Mexican heritage and celebrated those traditions in everyday life — especially through music and dance, where his enthusiasm was contagious.

Rico’s hands and imagination shaped many practical and artistic projects. He worked in installation, building, and mechanical roles that let him use both skill and creativity. His artistic talents were visible in the tattoos he wore proudly, the murals he helped create, and the photographs and images his loved ones cherish as lasting reminders of his eye for detail and love of expression.

Those closest to Richard remember a warm personality and a generous heart. He is survived by his parents, Lupe and Roger Hernandez; a sister, Sonya Ewing; four sons — Jordan, Manuel, Gabriel and Miguel Hernandez — and a daughter, Justice Hernandez; as well as four grandchildren, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by grandparents Manuel and Maria Munoz and Louise Mason.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate Richard’s life on July 28, 2024, at Shawnee Lake Garden House in Topeka. Attendees recalled his laughter, his willingness to help others, and the way his smile could lift a room. Those memories — of music, art, workmanship, and family devotion — remain the heart of how Richard will be remembered.

In honoring his memory, loved ones suggested planting a memorial tree or sharing a favorite memory of Rico with family. His life left a visible and lasting impression on the places he worked and on the people who loved him; his creative spirit and warm presence continue to be remembered by those who knew him.
