Remembering Rhegan

A life held close in memory

Rhegan Spiegel was remembered by friends and her Kansas City community as a bright, creative presence who loved bringing people together. A native of Savannah, Missouri, Rhegan played volleyball through high school and continued as a defensive specialist and libero for the University of Missouri–Kansas City Roos, where she combined athletics with a passion for the arts and academic achievement.

After college she found a welcoming home at Turnsol Books & Coffee in Kansas City, first volunteering and later joining the staff. Those who knew her say she poured energy and imagination into the space: arranging a children’s section, helping run a small borrowing library, and setting up a letter-writing station so visitors could connect. Co-owners and colleagues described her as someone who quietly shaped the bookstore’s character — practical, generous, and committed to making the place more inviting for families and neighbors.

Friends called her “Eggs” and remembered Rhegan as multifaceted: a former college athlete who skateboarded, loved literature, and cared deeply about her community. She was known for bringing people together, offering encouragement, and finding ways to contribute — whether through volunteer work, creative projects in the bookstore, or simply being present for friends.

In mid-October 2026, the community gathered at Turnsol Books to grieve and to celebrate her life. Those gatherings reflected the same spirit Rhegan cultivated — informal, inclusive, and focused on comfort and connection. People shared stories, lit candles, and used the bookstore’s letter-writing station to leave messages for her family and friends.

Rhegan’s life mattered for the ways she invested in community, creativity, and friendship. Though the public record documents the circumstances of her death, those who knew her emphasize the life she built: a thoughtful, curious, and caring person who left an imprint on a small bookstore that became a second home to many. Her friends and acquaintances remember her as a guiding light who wanted to make Kansas City a kinder, more connected place.
