Remembering Rashad

A life held close in memory

Rashad Malika Alton was born October 10, 2002, and passed away on July 11, 2024. A 2021 graduate of Morgantown High School, Rashad was known among family and friends for the easy confidence of a young man who loved the game of basketball and carried himself with a protective, cheerful presence.

Rashad was beginning to shape his own path in life. He had a passion for basketball and the camaraderie it brought, and he was taking steps to launch a car detailing business — a small but meaningful expression of his ambition and independence. Those who knew him recall a bright smile and a generous spirit: qualities that made him a steady friend and a beloved son.

Family was central to Rashad’s life. He was the son of Ashley Moman-Carr of Morgantown and the late Brandon Vann Alton of Pittsburgh, and he was raised with the love and support of stepfather Latrell Carr. He is survived by siblings Andre Moman, Nyssa Gracie Baker, and Unique Alton; grandparents Vickie McCray and Kenneth Baker; and an extended circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who remain custodians of his memory.

Rashad’s family and community remember him for his warmth, his competitive heart on the court, and the small daily ways he looked out for others. Though taken far too soon, the plans he made for his future, the relationships he nurtured, and the laughter he shared endure in the lives of those who loved him.

A brief note on circumstances: Rashad died after being shot and transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital on July 11, 2024. His family and community have sought to honor his life and memory in the months since. Services and remembrances were arranged through Hastings Funeral Home & Omega Crematory, which provided public notice of his passing. The impact of Rashad’s life — his energy, kindness, and aspirations — remains the focus of how his loved ones choose to remember him.
