Paul Williams

Paul Williams (July 2, 1939 – August 17, 1973) was an American baritone singer and one of the founding members of The Temptations, the Motown group whose harmonies and stagecraft helped define soul music in the 1960s. Known for a rich, emotive voice and precise choreography, Williams contributed to the group’s early sound and look, often anchoring songs with a steady, plaintive baritone and memorable stage presence.

Born in 1939, Williams rose to prominence alongside his bandmates as The Temptations gained national attention with their tight vocal blend and sharply rehearsed performances. Beyond his singing, he was respected for his work as a choreographer and for the disciplined professionalism he brought to live shows—elements that shaped the group’s identity and inspired countless performers.

In later years Williams faced serious health and personal challenges. Paul Williams’ life ended on August 17, 1973; his death was ruled a suicide. He is interred at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan.
