Remembering Oduro

A life held close in memory

Oduro "Big O" Yeboah was known to family and friends as a quiet, hardworking young man with big creative dreams. Born in Ghana and raised in Chicago from about age 11, he balanced multiple jobs while saving to study music production. He rose early each morning to help his mother by driving her to work and to take his nephew to school — small acts his family remembered as part of his daily care. He enjoyed photography, often stopping at Montrose Beach to capture the sunrise, and he taught himself music production with secondhand equipment as he prepared to attend Full Sail University.

Friends and collaborators described Oduro as trustworthy and reliable. He worked delivering pizzas and at a community support job, and he volunteered time promoting local events as part of a street team for area producers. Those who knew him praised his work ethic and his readiness to help others: family members say he often stepped in to assist neighbors and friends, sometimes at personal cost. Oduro also participated in local cultural events, speaking at a celebration of Ghanaian independence and staying connected to the Ghanaian community in Chicago.

His family remembers him for his intelligence, his gentle nature, and the practical ways he cared for those around him. Those details — his early mornings, his steady jobs, his careful saving for school, and his creative ambitions — sketch the life he was building. Though public records and news reports focus on the final, tragic hours of late October 2014, the fuller portrait is of a young man preparing a future in music, attentive to family responsibilities, and rooted in community. His life is remembered for those human qualities rather than the violence that took him.
