Obituary
A formal remembrance
Nicole Lynn Lester “Nikki” Blahitka (June 1, 1967 – December 30, 2016) was a devoted mother, cherished daughter, loyal sister, and dear friend whose warmth and generosity left a lasting mark on her community. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Nikki moved to Fort Worth with her family in 1981 and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1984. She carried with her a lively spirit, an eye for decorating, and a love of travel that she especially enjoyed sharing with family at the beach.
Nikki’s heart was most evident in her roles as a mother to her daughter, Savana, and her son, Ben. She took delight in their interests and supported them through school and activities, serving the Fort Worth Country Day community with tireless volunteer work. Nikki’s compassion extended beyond family: she was active in fundraising and service with organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Texas Health Resources Kepferle Board efforts, “Puttin’ on the Pink,” and the Presbyterian Night Shelter. Her colleagues remember her leadership role at Lon Smith Roofing, a family business where she served as director and partner.
An avid animal lover and rescuer of stray dogs, Nikki had a tender spot for creatures in need and a generous impulse to help. Friends recall her as a talented cook and decorator who brought warmth and style to gatherings. She was preceded in death by her father, Leon Lester, and step-father Lon Smith, and is survived by her mother, Judy Smith; her children Savana and Ben; sisters Jill Hanson and Christie Michael; the father of her children, Mark Blahitka; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who treasured her.
Celebrations of Nikki’s life were held in Fort Worth in early January 2017, and memorial gifts were suggested to Meals on Wheels, Alliance for Children, or Fort Worth Country Day in lieu of flowers. Those who knew Nikki remember her bright smile, her readiness to help others, and the kindness she carried into every part of her life. She will be remembered for the love she gave to family and community and for the many small, caring acts that defined her spirit.
