Obituary
A formal remembrance
Nicholas Bryan Roecker (September 30, 1994 – January 6, 2014) brought a steady, low-key warmth to everyone who knew him. A 2013 graduate of Lourdes High School, Nick had begun studies in science and engineering at the University of Minnesota–Duluth and carried with him the curiosity and steadiness that drew friends and family close.
Nick loved the outdoors and the simple satisfactions of working with his hands. He enjoyed camping and canoeing—especially trips with family and friends to the Boundary Waters—and treasured fishing expeditions for salmon and halibut in Alaska. Practical and enterprising, he had started his own firewood business, spending several seasons cutting and selling wood to help support himself and his family.
Family was central to Nick’s life. He was a devoted son to Bryan and Mary (Schaars) Roecker of Pine Island and a caring older brother to his sister Grace and brother Zachary, with whom he shared games, outdoor adventures, and everyday moments. He was active in his faith community, having attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church and its grade school, and he is remembered by extended family including grandparents and many cousins who enjoyed his easygoing companionship.
Those who knew Nick describe him as hardworking and easygoing, the kind of young man whose presence felt steady and reassuring. He had bright plans for his education and a love of nature that shaped his friendships and spare‑time pursuits.
Nick’s passing on January 6, 2014, was a profound loss for his family, friends, and community. His life—marked by a love of the outdoors, a willingness to work hard, and a gentle loyalty to those close to him—remains in the memories of those who loved him. Memorials in his honor were suggested to the Lourdes Tuition Assistance Fund or Holy Spirit Catholic Church and School.
