Obituary

A formal remembrance

Nathan McMurry Thomas brought a quiet determination and a warm, competitive spirit to everything he did. Born in Portland on December 19, 1979, Nathan grew into a thoughtful older brother and an eager student who loved challenges both in the classroom and on the playing field. He enjoyed soccer from an early age, favored the forward position, and took pleasure in scoring goals; he also collected sports cards, built with Legos, and went hiking and backpacking with his family.

Nathan faced a serious illness as a child when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, and he met that challenge with courage. Through months of treatment he stayed engaged with school and activities, returning to full health and continuing to pursue the things he loved. In the months before his death his family had recently returned to Portland, where Nathan began sixth grade at Fernwood Middle School, made the honor roll, and joined Portland City United’s soccer program.

Those who knew Nathan remember a bright student, a steady friend, and a boy who took pride in doing his best—whether on the classroom competitions where he was a finalist in the Fernwood Geography Bee or on the soccer field. He was a devoted brother and a child who found joy in simple, active pursuits with family and friends.

Nathan’s life was cut far too short on January 16, 1992. His family and community have honored his memory in many ways, including the Nathan McMurry Thomas Fund, which supports scholarships and activities that reflect Nathan’s love of learning and sport. His resilience through illness, his love of family, and his enthusiasm for school and soccer are the enduring parts of his legacy.

Friends and family remember Nathan not for the manner of his death but for a warm, determined boy who loved competition, the outdoors, and those closest to him. He is remembered with affection by his family, teammates, and classmates, and his memory continues to inspire support for young people who share his interests and promise.
