Remembering Nancy

A life held close in memory

Nancy Louise Young brought creativity and quiet care into the lives of those around her. Born in Bristol, Tennessee, she made Huntsville her home for most of her adult life and became known in the local arts community for hand-crafted jewelry, beadwork and hanging mobiles displayed at the Flying Monkey at Lowe Mill. Friends and neighbors remembered her as a creative spirit who took pleasure in small, tactile joys—designing pieces by hand, tending her garden, and sharing knowledge of plants and traditional herbal practices.

Within the Free Cherokee community Nancy carried the name White Spirit Feather and served as a respected herbalist and pipe carrier, roles that reflect a deep engagement with spiritual and communal traditions. She also worked in electronics testing and assembly for local firms over the years, blending practical skill with artistic sensibility. Nancy completed her schooling at Lee High School and pursued further study at Calhoun Community and Tennessee Valley Colleges.

Family was important to Nancy. Public remembrances list relatives across several states, and notices at the time of her passing describe visitation and funeral services attended by friends and loved ones. Her life was centered on hands-on work—whether creating art, gardening in her yard, or sharing herbal knowledge—and those who knew her recall a steady, compassionate presence and a love of making things that brought beauty to everyday life.

Nancy’s passing in September 2017 was mourned by many in the Huntsville community. While public records focus on verifiable facts about her life and community roles, they offer a glimpse of a person who combined craft, care, and cultural knowledge. This life—marked by artistry, quiet stewardship of the land, and commitment to community traditions—remains the heart of how she is remembered.
