Obituary

A formal remembrance

Mina Shulz brought quiet steadiness and care to the many roles she held in life: partner, mother, and member of her close-knit Olalla community. Alongside her husband Steve, Mina helped build a welcoming gathering place for friends through their involvement in local brewing and neighborhood life. She and Steve raised their daughter Alicia together and created a home remembered for hospitality and shared moments.

Born Mina Saito (as noted in the family memorial), she and Steven met while he was stationed at Yokota Air Base in Japan; the two married May 1, 1993, and later welcomed their daughter in December 1997. Those who knew them recalled their warmth, willingness to help neighbors, and the small rituals—shared meals, gatherings of friends, and a love of craft beer—that defined much of their everyday joy. Friends and neighbors remembered Mina for a kind presence and the way she and Steve opened their home to others. Mina and Steve enjoyed a period of life together in Olalla where they pursued projects and community ties, including running a small local brewing venture known in the area as E2W (East 2 West) Brewing. Their brewery and home were places where friends and family gathered; those connections became an enduring part of their legacy. Community notices and the funeral home record that followed their passing emphasize the couple's place in the social fabric of the area. The family’s funeral arrangements were handled by Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor, with a memorial service announced in late August 2022. The obituary posted by the funeral home and hosted on Legacy.com honors Mina and Steven together, noting that both passed away suddenly on August 18, 2022, at age 51, and inviting the community to share condolences and remembrances. Visitors to the memorial remembered Mina and Steve for their kindness and the ordinary, meaningful ways they enriched neighbors’ lives. Mina’s life—centered on family, friendship, and community—left a quiet but lasting imprint on those who knew her. This page honors the person she was: a loving mother and partner, a neighbor who cared, and someone who helped make a small corner of the world feel like home.
