Remembering Michael
A life held close in memory
Michael G. Ransear of Herkimer, New York, passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2013. Born February 8, 1956, in Watertown, New York, Michael built a life around service, practical skill, and family. After completing his education in Cape Vincent, he honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1976 to 1978. He married Jolene R. Hanley on May 3, 1976, and family remained central to his life.
For nearly two decades Michael worked as a corrections officer with the New York State Department of Corrections, retiring in 2006. Colleagues remember him as a dependable presence who carried his commitment to duty into everyday life. He was active in his community as a past treasurer of the NYSCOPBA union and at one time served with the Oriskany Falls Volunteer Fire Department. Michael was a member of the Christian Bible Church in Mohawk and supported his community in ways both practical and quiet.
Michael’s friends and family recall him as a true handyman—able to fix houses, cars, and nearly anything that needed attention. He enjoyed landscaping and baseball and spent time coaching youth, where his steady, hands-on guidance left an impression on younger generations. Above all, he cherished his family: his wife Jolene; his children Melissa, Maxine (and Matt) Nasby, Mike Ransear, and Lorae (and Justin) Kastner; and his five grandchildren, who were described as the light of his life.
He is also survived by siblings and extended family who mourn his loss and remember his practical generosity and faith. Michael was predeceased by his parents, Gene and Betty Ransear, and a brother, Alan.
A funeral service was held March 18, 2013, at First Assembly of God in Marcy, New York, with calling hours at Heintz Funeral Home in Utica. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations to the Christian Bible Church in Mohawk. Those who knew Michael remember a man whose steady hands and steady heart were offered freely to family, friends, and community alike.
