Remembering Michael
A life held close in memory
Sergeant Michael Joe “Mike” Naylor (December 27, 1967 – October 9, 2014) is remembered for a life shaped by service, leadership, and a steady commitment to others. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Mike answered a call to serve early in life when he joined the United States Air Force. Over a long military career he rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, serving with distinction for 26 years before retiring from active duty.
After his military service, Mike brought the same dedication to his community in West Texas. He joined the Midland County Sheriff’s Office in 1999, initially as a corrections officer, and over the years became a respected sergeant who helped develop and lead the department’s Mental Health Unit. Colleagues and community members remember him as a leader who cared about improving how law enforcement worked with citizens facing mental-health challenges.
Mike also served as Commander of the Midland County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, a role in which he led solemn tributes and supported families and fellow first responders at funerals and memorials. His commitment to honor, respect, and professionalism in that role brought comfort to many.
Mike’s family and the Midland community mourned his passing on October 9, 2014. He is survived by his wife and other family members who, along with his law-enforcement family, continue to honor his memory. Services were arranged through Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory, and Mike was laid to rest at Prairie Haven Memorial Park.
Those who knew Sergeant Naylor recall a man whose life was defined by service — to his country, to his county, and to the people he pledged to protect. His leadership in the Mental Health Unit and the Honor Guard stands as part of his legacy, and his devotion to duty remains a meaningful example for colleagues and community members who continue to remember him with respect and gratitude.
