Remembering Michael

A life held close in memory

Michael Douglas Beverly served his community with steady care and commitment. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he brought that sense of duty to a long career in public service—including eleven years with the Chester City Police Department—where he rose to the rank of corporal. Colleagues remembered him as a respected supervisor who took particular interest in mentoring young people in the Highland Gardens neighborhood, investing time to discourage gang activity and to offer guidance to teens who needed a steady presence.

Beyond his uniform, Beverly was a family man. He is publicly recorded as being survived by his wife and five children; those relationships were central to his life and to how neighbors and fellow officers described him. His work and his mentorship were rooted in a desire to make everyday life better and safer for the people around him.

Beverly’s death on October 16, 2001 was a painful loss for his family, his fellow officers, and the Chester community that benefited from his efforts. In the years after his death, the criminal justice process brought convictions related to the shooting, and his colleagues and local residents have continued to honor his service and memory in conversations, memorial listings, and community remembrances.

Public records and memorial pages preserve some of the facts of his life—his military service, his rank and tenure with the Chester Police Department, and his role as a husband and father—but they give only a partial picture of the man known to family, friends, and those he mentored. Those left behind remember him for more than the circumstances of his passing: for steady commitment to service, for caring about youth in a troubled neighborhood, and for the daily work of protecting his city. This remembrance offers respect for the life he led and the family and community that continue to hold his memory.

Michael was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
