Remembering Michael
A life held close in memory
Michael Day of Kalamazoo tragically departed this life on Monday, May 26, 2014. Though only 13, Michael was known to family and friends as a child of his neighborhood whose presence mattered to those around him. Family and loved ones gathered to honor his memory with a service on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, preceded by a family hour and a public visitation the evening before. Interment followed at the Athens Indian Reservations Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Whitley Memorial Funeral Home.
Michael’s passing left a deep impression on the Milwood and Edison neighborhood communities he knew. In the weeks after his death, neighbors, school staff, and community leaders spoke about the importance of supporting young people and one another; his loss became a call for greater care and attention to the children of Kalamazoo.
Those who knew Michael remembered him in the guestbook and messages of condolence left with the family, reflecting the affection he inspired in family and community. While his life was brief, the remembrance of Michael Day endures in the hearts of those who loved him and in the community efforts that sought to honor his memory.
