Mercedes Holford

Mercedes Michelle “Sissy” Holford (April 23, 2007 – July 14, 2020) brought light and laughter to the lives of those around her. A daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and friend, Mercedes was known for her big heart and the easy way she made people smile. She loved joking with others, sharing hugs with younger cousins, and showing the warmth that became her quiet trademark.

Sports were a joyful part of Mercedes’s life. She had played softball and basketball while growing up and, in middle school, she focused on basketball — often playing with friends at Central Park and Hillcrest. Beyond the court she enjoyed music, watching YouTube, and making videos on TikTok, small everyday pleasures that reflected a bright and curious young spirit.

Mercedes had just completed seventh grade at Robinson Middle School and cherished time with family. Relatives remember her affectionate nature and the special bond she kept with her siblings and cousins. She was loved by her family, including siblings Nevaeh Mays, Germane Mays, Deon Ikner, Cazh’Mere Green, and Chy’Na Green; her grandmother Bettie Holford; and a wide circle of aunts, uncles and cousins who treasured her smile and sense of humor.

Her family asked that memories of Mercedes emphasize the life she lived rather than the manner of her passing. She will be fondly remembered for her laughter, her hugs, and the small, everyday ways she showed love to those closest to her. Though her years were few, the warmth she shared left a lasting impression on family and friends.

Services were held at Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel with burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Those who wish to honor Mercedes’s memory are encouraged to hold fast to the joy she showed in simple moments — a game with friends, a song shared, a hug for a cousin — and to remember the bright smile she carried with her.
