Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Maya Leah Nicole Nicki
Maya Leah Nicole “Nicki” Wootton (born November 30, 1987) was remembered by family and friends as a bright, compassionate presence who devoted much of her life to helping others and rescuing animals. A proud graduate of Hickman High School, Nicki earned a career certification in peer support counseling and used her own hard-won experience to connect with people facing addiction and hardship. Those who knew her recall a person who could put others at ease with humor and patience, who spoke candidly about her struggles and turned that honesty into a strength when supporting friends and neighbors.
Nicki’s devotion to animals was a throughline in her life: she once ran into a burning home to try to save a cat, and rescued or cared for many animals over the years. Her family remembered her as someone who gave generously of her time and heart — reaching out to friends, strangers, and animals alike. She is survived by her mother, Tammy Hickman, her nana Beth Young, and an extended circle of relatives and close friends who treasured her energy and determination.
Public accounts note that she trained to be a peer support counselor after confronting her own difficulties with substance use, and that she found purpose in offering others empathy, practical help, and companionship. That commitment to helping others — even when life had been difficult for her — is what many who loved Nicki most wanted to emphasize: she was someone who carried compassion into the world.
Nicki’s death in mid-February 2021 was a profound loss to family and community. Rather than defining her by the circumstances of her passing, those who shared memories of her chose to honor the warmth, courage, and steady care she showed to people and animals throughout her life. Her family planned a celebration of life; in lieu of flowers they suggested gifts to charities that reflect Nicki’s love for animals and support for people in recovery. Her memory endures in the stories, rescued pets, and acts of kindness she inspired.
