Remembering Maura

A life held close in memory

Maura Elaine Binkley was a warm, kind-hearted young woman whose loyalty to family and friends shone through in everything she did. Born in Atlanta in 1997 and raised in the Dunwoody community, Maura completed her schooling at Dunwoody High School before moving to Tallahassee, where she was a senior at Florida State University. At FSU she pursued studies in German and in Editing, Writing, and Media, and she planned to continue a life of service—exploring opportunities such as a Fulbright scholarship or Teach For America after graduation.

Maura was known to those who loved her for a gentle spirit, a fearless devotion to the people she cared for, and a quiet generosity that made her a faithful friend and treasured family member. She is remembered by her parents, Jeff and Margaret Binkley; her brother, Sean; her grandmother, Margaret; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who were touched by her warmth.

Friends and family recall Maura’s laughter, her thoughtfulness, and the ways she gave to others—qualities that inspired the creation of Maura’s Voice, a research fund established by her parents to honor her memory and to work toward preventing violence and hatred. Through that work, Maura’s commitment to service and to making the world kinder continues to influence research, policy conversations, and community efforts.

Though her life was unfinished, Maura’s compassion and devotion remain. Those who knew her carry forward the memory of a young woman who loved deeply, worked with purpose, and brought comfort and light to those around her. She will be remembered not for how she died but for the generous and hopeful life she lived.
