Matthew Yarnell

Matthew Glenn Yarnell (Nov. 9, 1977 – Dec. 9, 2025) was a man who carried a quiet love of the outdoors and a readiness to help his neighbors. Born in Houston, Texas, to Gary and Barbara (Hallinan) Yarnell, Matthew made central Pennsylvania his home and became known for his warmth, his adventurous streak, and his devotion to family and faith.

A 1996 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Matthew later earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Penn State. He volunteered his time at the East Broad Top Railroad in any capacity that was needed, offering practical help and friendly company to a local institution he cared about. Those who knew him remember a passionate sportsman who found deep joy in hunting, fishing and time spent in the woods. He also loved playing his guitar and was described by friends and family as adventurous and energetic in pursuits both small and bold.

Matthew is survived by his father, Gary Yarnell; his mother, Barbara (Bob) Mertiff; his brothers Ryan (Angela) and Travis (Summer) Yarnell; his children Carrie and Rocco Yarnell; a grandson, Oliver; numerous nieces and nephews; a large extended family; and his cherished cat, Leo. He was an active member of his Orthodox parish and served as a Subdeacon, a role that reflected his commitment to his faith community.

Visitation was held at Derman Funeral Home in Tyrone, with a funeral service at St. George Orthodox Church in Altoona. He was interred at Saint Mary’s Nativity of the Theotokos Cemetery in Madera. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial donations to the East Broad Top Railroad or to Ss. Michael and Mary Parish.

Matthew’s life was defined by a love of the natural world, a readiness to lend a hand, and close ties with family and his parish. He will be remembered for the quiet ways he gave his time and for the simple pleasures — a guitar tune, a day in the woods, the company of friends and family — that filled his life.
