Matthew Roach

Matthew Earl Roach, 40, of Elgin, South Carolina, was a devoted husband and loving father whose warmth and easy laughter were central to family life. Born October 2, 1982, in Columbia, Matt built a life around his family and the things that brought him joy: time at the ocean, saltwater fishing, golf, Gamecock football and, most of all, coaching his children. He enjoyed grilling, playing guitar, and dancing in the living room with his wife and kids—small, everyday moments that reflected how fully he embraced family life.

A devoted coach and community volunteer, Matt served as head coach of the SC Diamondbacks 11U baseball team, sharing his enthusiasm for the game with young players and supporting their growth on and off the field. He owned and operated Air Restoration Heating and Cooling, and was an active member of Awaken Church, Columbia Country Club, and the Shivers Green Hunt Club. Those communities remember him for his ready smile, sense of humor, and the encouragement he offered others.

Matt married Julie Allison Motley Roach and together they raised five children—Jacob, Mason, Ainsley, Eli, and Ethan—who were the center of his world. He was also cherished by extended family, including his mother Diane Cowart Parker and stepfather David Parker, his in-laws Marion and Gail Motley, and a broad circle of friends and cousins. He counted among his close friends Benji Glover and Andy Watson and treasured the relationships that enriched his life.

Services to celebrate Matt’s life were held at Awaken Church in Columbia with burial in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts were directed to Gideons International. Though his passing was sudden and mourned deeply, those who knew him recall a life shaped by love for family, a passion for the outdoors, and a gift for making ordinary moments brighter. He will be remembered for his devotion to his children, his infectious enthusiasm for coaching, and the laughter he brought to those around him.
