Remembering Matthew

A life held close in memory

Matthew Josh Macerato, age 18, of Wilmington, Delaware, was taken from his family on December 26, 2004. Matt was the loving son of Gene and Jayne Macerato and a cherished brother to Melissa, Mandy, Gene, Paul, Gina, and Jessie. Those who knew him remember a young man with a creative spark — a talented musician who had recently co‑founded a studio and was beginning to build his life and passions. Matt had also started a new job at Casual Male Big & Tall, where he worked alongside friends and teammates.

Family and friends gathered to honor Matt’s life with a memorial service on December 30, 2004, at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home in Newark, Delaware. In keeping with the family’s wishes, contributions in his memory were suggested to the American Cancer Society. The outpouring of support at that time reflected how many lives he had touched in his short years.

Though his time was far too brief, Matthew’s memory lives on in the stories his family shares — of music practiced late into the night, small acts of kindness, and the close bonds he kept with siblings and loved ones. Those who loved him continue to remember his gentle spirit and the creative promise he carried. His life, and the love of those who survive him, remain at the center of how he is mourned and celebrated.

Matthew was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
