Remembering Mason
A life held close in memory
Mason M. Payne of Moline, Illinois, was a spirited young man known for his love of the outdoors, mechanical curiosity, and the easy warmth he showed his family and friends. Born March 7, 2001, Mason grew up in Savanna, where childhood adventures and family camping trips helped shape a lifelong love of nature and fishing. He could often be found at the water’s edge before sunrise or right after work, rod in hand, savoring quiet mornings and the calm of the lakes he treasured.
Mason was a thrill-seeker who embraced activity and motion. As a boy he practiced parkour and later found joy riding sport bikes — a passion he shared with his brother Zach. He took pride in the practical things he loved, including his truck, which carried not only tools but also his fishing gear and the memories of many outings with friends and family.
In 2017 Mason met his fiancée, Maddy Womack. Their relationship grew into an engaged partnership marked by shared moments watching sunrises and sunsets — simple times that reflected a deep connection. Family was central to Mason’s life. He treasured time with his brothers and regularly checked in with loved ones, stopping by to say hello whenever he could. He was remembered by those close to him for his adventurous spirit, loyalty, and the joy he brought into gatherings.
Mason is lovingly survived by his fiancée, Maddy Womack; his parents, Christina and Andrew Shaffer; brothers Zach Coleman, Brycen Shaffer, Declan Shaffer, Austen Payne, and Averie Payne; his nana, Sherry Hood; and close friends who were part of his everyday life. He was preceded in death by his PaPaw, Paul Thulen.
A memorial visitation and time of sharing were held at Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, where family and friends gathered to celebrate Mason’s life and the ways he brightened the lives around him. Those who knew Mason remember an adventurous, devoted young man whose passions — fishing, motorcycles, family, and faithful friendships — told the story of a life lived fully in small, meaningful moments. He will be remembered fondly for the energy he brought to those who loved him and the quiet mornings on the water that he held dear.
