Obituary

A formal remembrance

Mason Cole Pridemore of Hickory passed away on February 20, 2025, at the age of 22. Born on September 20, 2002, in Burke County, Mason was a beloved son of Corey Heath Pridemore and Kimberly Ellen Benfield. He grew up in the area and graduated from East Burke High School, where he formed friendships and memories that stayed with him into adulthood.

Mason worked in the shipping department at Target, a job where his steady presence and diligence were a part of his everyday life. He cherished his close family relationships and is remembered particularly for the bond he shared with his companion, Ashley Brown of Valdese. Family was central to Mason’s life — he is survived by his parents; his brother Kaden Pridemore; his sisters Chloe Pridemore, Dixie Leatherman and Heidi Leatherman; and grandparents Sharon Pridemore, Randy and Linda Leatherman, and Elgie and Martha Benfield. He was also loved by Ashley’s parents, Cletus and Jackie Brown, and other extended family members.

Mason was preceded in death by his grandfather Joseph William Pridemore and his aunt Robin McCrain. Those who knew Mason remember a young man whose presence mattered to his family and community, and whose life touched others in ways that continue beyond his years.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate Mason’s life. A visitation was held on February 28, 2025, at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, followed by a graveside service on March 1, 2025, at the R and L Leatherman Family Cemetery in Connelly Springs. The services offered a chance for loved ones to share memories, offer support, and honor the life Mason lived.

Mason’s passing has left a deep void among his family and friends. Though his time was far too short, those who loved him remember his ties to family, his quiet contributions at work, and the warmth of his relationships. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by those who knew him best.
